This is a screenshot from the original Massachusetts Institute of Technology Auto-ID Center website. The Auto-ID Center created a standard called the EPC which is used by next generation barcode chips. These barcodes scan themselves and allow a wide range of additional applications including anti-theft, inventory, and authentication.
